Amici dell'Enotria - Toronto Italian wine Tasting club
Amici dell'Enotria

Amici dell’ Enotria
is a wine appreciation club in Toronto Ontario dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of Italian wines.

Enotria “The Land of the Vines” is the name given to Italy by the ancient Greeks.

Approximately eight to ten wine tasting events are hosted by the club each year which provide a forum for tasting a wide range of Italian wines, eating great Italian food, and meeting visiting producers and importing agents.

The club has an ever expanding wine cellar, which provides members the opportunity to taste wines which have been aged appropriately or that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try.

Thursday March 26, 2009 6:15 PM
Tartu College, 310 Bloor St. West

This month's tasting will feature 8 Brunello di Montalcino's (1 - 1999, 6 -  2001 & 1 - 2002) from various producers.  Brunello di Montalcino is a red  wine produced in the vineyards surrounding the town of Montalcino located  about 110 km southwest of Florence in Tuscany.  Brunello, roughly translated  as "nice dark one" in the local dialect, is the unofficial name of the clone  of Sangiovese Grosso grown in the Montalcino region. In 1980, the Brunello  di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e  Garantita (DOCG) designation and today is one of the Italy's best-known and  most expensive wines.

Unique & Non Traditional Italian Reds – Cellar Tasting

Tartu College, 310 Bloor St. West

This month’s tasting will feature eight unique wines from across Italy.  They are unique in that they are either fairly unknown Italian varietals, such as a Teroldego Rotaliano from Trentino – Alto Adige and the Montefalco Rosso from Umbria (a blend of Sagrantino and Sangiovese), or they are various blends of indigenous varietals and non-traditional varietals.   For example, the Primo Volo IGT is a joint venture between Veneto producer Capodilista (Merlot), Piedmont producer Villa Gianda (Nebbiolo) and Tuscan producer Rocca delle Macie (Sangiovese).  We also will be presenting 3 Super Tuscan’s or IGTs (Il Borro, Colvechio Syrah and Il Serre Nuove from Ornellaia) produced with a variety of different grapes and a Piedmont IGT (Sito Moresco) from Angelo Gaja and an interesting wine from Puglia (Cottinone IGT).

Super Tuscan / IGT Tasting For more info
This month’s tasting will feature eight amazing, yet lesser-known Super Tuscan / IGT reds which we have been storing in the club’s cellar for the last several years.

The term "Super Tuscan" describes any Tuscan red wine that does not adhere to traditional blending laws for the region. Super Tuscans often use other non-indigenous grapes (i.e., cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, etc.) which makes them ineligible for DOC(G) classification under the traditional Italian regulations.  However, this does not mean these wines are “lesser” than their DOC(G) Tuscan cousins, and in fact many Super Tuscans are superior (and much more expensive) than the traditional Tuscan reds.
